Barbados

The Barbados series has a prehistoric, otherworldly sense of beauty with trees large and solid, branches and leaves creating patterns of geometric shapes, feelings of enchantment and mystery created by the movement from the trade winds blowing off the rugged East Coast.

When the British arrived in 1627, the island was practically covered with forest, within 20 years almost half of the forest cover was removed. By 1665 all forests was cleared with the exception of a few groves.

In 1875 legislation was enacted to encourage cultivation. Most woodlots contained West Indies Mahogany introduced to Barbados from the larger Antilles around 1780.

They served as wind breaks and for producing furniture. In 1907, the government passed the Preservation of Trees Act to ensure preservation of these majestic mahogany groves. Barbados forests are home to many species of wild life, like the green monkeys which appear often in the evenings to wander around.
